The Royal Thai Army concluded a two-day visit from Malaysia’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Mohammad Nizam Jaffar, who met with Thai military leaders to assess the Thai–Cambodian border situation and discuss ASEAN’s potential role in monitoring the ceasefire. The meetings, held July 29 and 30, included briefings from the 1st and 2nd Army Region commanders in Ubon Ratchathani and Bangkok.
In Ubon Ratchathani, General Nizam was briefed by Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang on recent armed clashes, which Thai officials linked to border map disputes and Cambodian military activities in contested areas. Cambodia’s use of civilians near Ta Muen Thom Temple and its deployment of landmines were also raised. Thai officials confirmed that captured Cambodian troops are being treated in line with international law and will be repatriated.
On July 30, General Nizam met with First Army Region Commander Lt Gen Amarit Boonsuya to reaffirm Malaysia’s proposal to deploy two monitoring teams: an International Defence Attaché Team and an ASEAN Monitoring Team. These teams would report ceasefire violations and help de-escalate tensions. Malaysia also called for a freeze on troop movements and immediate humanitarian access.
Thai commanders confirmed their compliance with the ceasefire and expressed full support for the ASEAN observation mission. Informal communication channels between Thai and Cambodian field officers were encouraged to maintain calm ahead of the General Border Committee meeting scheduled for August 4.
