Thailand Health Excellence: Positioning the Kingdom as the World's Healing Destination

The Tourism Authority of Thailand launches Thailand Health Excellence and pioneers Surf Therapy, reinforcing the Kingdom's ambition to become a global centre for health and healing.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has formally launched "Thailand Health Excellence", a national initiative developed under the guiding concept "Healing is the New Luxury", with the aim of elevating the Kingdom's standing from a respected medical hub to a fully-fledged "Global Health & Healing Destination". A

s part of the launch, TAT introduced "Thailand Surf Therapy – The Wave of Healing", the country's first structured surf-based therapy programme for emotional and mental wellbeing.

The initiative reflects a broader shift in international travel patterns, as visitors increasingly prioritise preventive healthcare and mental wellbeing alongside conventional medical treatment. This growing segment of travellers, TAT notes, tends to have higher spending power and to stay for considerably longer periods than general tourists.

A New Chapter for Coastal Wellness

The pilot Thailand Surf Therapy programme was held at Memories Surf House in Khao Lak, Takua Pa District, Phang-nga province — one of the country's most established surf destinations and an area recognised internationally for its natural coastal assets. 

The programme was developed in partnership with Waves for Change, a South African organisation specialising in surf therapy, together with Prince of Songkla University's Phuket Campus and a network of local operators, including La Flora Group, La Vita Sana, Chanthaburi Surf Tribe and other community partners.

Rather than positioning itself as a clinical treatment, Thailand Surf Therapy has been designed as a structured wellness experience that combines surfing, movement, mindfulness and positive social connection within a safe, supportive environment. 

Participants are guided through water safety, progressive surf skills and breathing and grounding techniques intended to help manage stress, build emotional resilience and foster self-confidence.

Under the Rise On Wave development network, the concept has since been shaped into three proposed formats catering to different visitor needs: a three-to-five-day "Wave Reset Programme" for short-stay stress management, a seven-to-14-day "Ocean Balance Programme", and a "Surf & Soul Programme" of 14 days or more for those seeking deeper, longer-term restoration. TAT officials have described the approach as a form of "co-creation", combining international surf therapy expertise with Thailand's coastal identity, service culture and natural environment to create a genuinely Thai wellness model with global relevance.

Three Pillars of Health Excellence

Beyond Surf Therapy, Thailand Health Excellence is structured around three strategic pillars. Medical Excellence encompasses the continued development of world-class treatment and rehabilitation standards. Science-Based Wellness covers research-backed wellness innovations designed to support preventive health and long-term vitality.

Science-Based Local Wisdom, meanwhile, focuses on applying modern science and technology to Thai herbal knowledge and traditional healing practices, adding credibility and international appeal to indigenous wisdom.

In parallel, TAT has partnered with Siriraj Hospital and other allied institutions to launch "Dialysis-Friendly Long Stay Thailand", a service designed to give international visitors who require regular dialysis the confidence to travel and remain in the Kingdom for extended periods. A new digital platform, ThailandHealthX.com, has also been developed to connect Thai health and wellness operators directly with prospective international visitors.

A Sector with Substantial Growth Potential

The initiative arrives at a moment of considerable opportunity for global wellness and medical tourism. According to the Global Wellness Institute, global wellness tourism expenditure reached approximately US$830 billion in 2023 and is projected to exceed US$1.35 trillion by 2028, with the sector expanding faster than international tourism as a whole.

Thailand is well placed to capture a significant share of this growth. Industry estimates put the Kingdom's medical tourism market at around US$2.57 billion in 2023, with projections suggesting this could rise to as much as US$16 billion by 2030. TAT figures indicate that medical and wellness travellers already spend an average of approximately 107,662 baht per trip—more than double the spending of general tourists—underlining the segment's outsized economic value relative to its visitor numbers.

Thailand's underlying credentials support this trajectory. The Kingdom is home to more than 60 hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission International, the highest number in Southeast Asia, alongside a network of over 500 medical facilities nationwide. Treatment costs typically remain 30 to 70 per cent lower than in Western countries, while key source markets include the Middle East, South Asia and neighbouring ASEAN countries.

Government Policy Driving the Vision

Thailand Health Excellence builds directly on long-standing government policy. Since 2016, Thailand has pursued a national strategy to position itself as an international medical hub, most recently reflected in the Ministry of Public Health's Strategy for Developing Thailand as a Medical Hub (2025–2034), approved by its Steering Committee in 2024. This builds upon earlier frameworks, including the development of the Andaman Wellness Corridor across Phuket, Krabi, Phang-nga and Ranong, and supportive visa measures such as the Medical Treatment Visa, which allows a one-year multiple-entry stay for patients requiring ongoing treatment, and long-stay privilege visa schemes for residents seeking continuous access to Thai healthcare.

These policies are designed to support Thailand's broader "New Engine of Growth" strategy, in which medical, wellness and affluent tourism are treated as priority sectors capable of driving economic value while generating employment across both urban medical centres and coastal or rural communities.

Towards a Sustainable Life Economy

TAT has framed Thailand Health Excellence and Thailand Surf Therapy in particular as part of a wider ambition to build a sustainable "Life Economy"—one that channels the benefits of wellness tourism into local communities rather than concentrating them solely in major hospitals or resorts. 

By combining accredited medical care, evidence-based wellness innovation and Thailand's natural and cultural assets, the Kingdom is seeking to differentiate itself in an increasingly competitive global market.

As international demand for meaningful, health-oriented travel continues to accelerate, Thailand's blend of medical credibility, natural resources and hospitality culture positions the Kingdom to strengthen its role not merely as a destination for treatment, but as a genuine home for holistic healing — reinforcing its long-term ambition to be recognised as the world's capital of health and wellbeing.
