GI Tour & Trail Running 2026 Wraps Up in Phetchaburi, Cementing Thailand's Sports Tourism Push

The five-province Amazing Thailand GI Tour & Trail Running 2026 concludes in Phetchaburi, reinforcing TAT's wider ambition to grow sports tourism nationwide.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has brought the "Amazing Thailand GI Tour & Trail Running 2026" series to a close with its fifth and final leg in Phetchaburi province, concluding a five-month nationwide campaign that paired trail running with the promotion of Thailand's Geographical Indication (GI) products under the theme "Run, Eat, Travel, Shop".

The closing event was held on 20–21 June at Ban Thung Kham in Cha-am District, one of Phetchaburi's scenic coastal areas known for its heritage crafts and local produce. As with previous legs of the series, participants were offered three race categories — 20 kilometres, 10 kilometres and a shorter distance suitable for casual runners — while also being invited to sample regional specialities, browse community-run stalls and take part in cultural activities connected to the province's GI-certified goods.

A Five-Region Journey Linking Sport, Culture and Commerce

Launched in April by TAT Governor Ms Thapanee Kiatphaibool, together with representatives from the Department of Internal Trade, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Department of Intellectual Property, the GI Tour & Trail Running series was designed to connect Thailand's growing running community with the country's regional identity. Over five months, the event travelled through Chiang Mai, Rayong, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Si Thammarat and, finally, Phetchaburi — each stop showcasing GI products distinctive to that region, from coffee experiences in the North to fruit-based activities in the East, cultural and culinary programmes in the Northeast, natural wellness products in the South, and heritage crafts in the Central region.

A Virtual Run option, open to participants unable to travel to the physical race sites, ran alongside the five on-ground events, allowing runners nationwide to accumulate distance and compete for prizes throughout the campaign period.

Positive Reception Across the Series

Since its launch, the initiative has drawn strong and growing interest from both domestic and international runners, with each leg building on the momentum of the last — from the opening event in Chiang Mai through to Rayong's lively provincial stadium finale, which featured a free concert and a community market with more than fifty vendors.

TAT had projected that the series as a whole would attract in excess of 100,000 participants and generate more than 250 million baht in economic value for local accommodation, food and beverage, transport and community enterprises across the five host provinces.

By linking each race route directly to a signature local product, organisers were able to extend runners' time and spending in each destination beyond race day itself, encouraging visits to nearby attractions, homestays and community enterprises — an approach that reflects TAT's broader strategy of using sport as a vehicle for distributing tourism income more evenly across the country, rather than concentrating it in major cities.

Part of a Broader Sports Tourism Strategy

The GI Tour & Trail Running series forms one strand of a wider and increasingly active sports tourism agenda that TAT has pursued over the past year. The organisation's flagship event, the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok, remains the only World Athletics-certified marathon held in the Thai capital, drawing runners along a route through Lumpini Park, Victory Monument and Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

TAT has also formalised cooperation with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and World Athletics to develop the race further as part of a future global marathon series. Beyond the capital, the Amazing Thailand Pattaya Marathon — now in its 33rd edition — has grown into one of the country's largest road-race festivals, attracting more than 40,000 runners and families to the eastern seaboard each year, while the Amazing MuayThai Festival in Hua Hin has combined martial arts heritage with tourism to showcase Thailand's indigenous sporting culture to international visitors.

TAT officials have pointed to rising global interest in fitness and experiential travel as the driving force behind this strategy. Industry data cited by TAT shows that international sports travel now accounts for a meaningful share of global tourism spending, with Thai travellers themselves increasingly planning trips around marathon weekends both at home and across the region — a trend reflected in rising accommodation searches for major Asian marathon events over the past year.

Government Policy Backing the Sector

The GI Tour & Trail Running project also reflects a deliberate alignment between TAT's tourism promotion mandate and the government's wider goals for supporting GI-registered products, which are overseen by the Department of Intellectual Property and the Department of Internal Trade. By pairing sport tourism with GI product promotion, the initiative supports two national policy priorities simultaneously: growing high-value, community-distributed tourism income, and raising the commercial profile of locally distinctive Thai goods.

This complements the government's broader ambition, pursued jointly by TAT and the Sports Authority of Thailand, to position the Kingdom as a "World Class Sports Events Destination" — a goal reflected in a growing calendar of nationwide sports tourism festivals and race series developed in partnership with provincial authorities, private operators and international sporting bodies.

Looking Ahead

With the 2026 series now concluded, TAT has indicated that the success of the GI Tour & Trail Running format — and the broader appetite for sport-and-culture travel experiences it has revealed — will inform future editions of the project, alongside continued development of the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok as an internationally recognised event and further expansion of provincial race series in partnership with local communities.

As health-conscious and experience-driven travel continues to gain ground worldwide, TAT's approach of weaving sport, cuisine, culture and shopping into a single journey looks set to remain a central pillar of its strategy for distributing tourism value across Thailand's regions in the years ahead.
