Herb of the Year 2025 Thailand Uses Herbs as Soft Power to Reach Global Markets “Think Wellness, Think Thai Herb”

Thailand’s 2025 herbal development plan is pushing forward to highlight “Phlai, Black Ginger, and Kratom” as the signature herbs of the year, aiming to boost domestic use, expand exports, and develop high-value health products. The official launch will take place at the National Herb Expo from July 2–6.

“Phlai” is being promoted alongside Thai massage, traditional medicine, sports, and the wellness industry to increase acceptance within healthcare services.

“Black Ginger” stands out for its ability to reduce abdominal fat and shows promise in sports nutrition, beauty, and workplace wellness markets. Its use is expected to add more than 600 million baht in economic value annually.

“Kratom” is in the research and development phase for medical applications, including pain relief and addiction treatment substitutes. It is projected to generate over 900 million baht in value, with plans to expand exports.

Additionally, there are plans to promote Thai herbs globally through Thai massage, using the core message “Think Wellness, Think Thai Herb,” connecting traditional knowledge with the global health industry. This initiative will be officially introduced on July 4 during the National Herb Expo.

At the same time, efforts are underway to address the use of alcohol-extracted herbal products by proposing their classification as pharmaceutical chemicals under drug laws, along with measures to support manufacturers. This will enable continuous industrial production and development of herbal products, promoting their use in target industries such as medicine, cosmetics, medical devices, and health products, before extending to bio-based industries and clean energy in the future.
