Thailand Secures Major Deal to Export Native Ayam Bangkok Chicken to Indonesia

Thailand marks a historic milestone as its Department of Livestock Development announces a successful agreement to export the native Ayam Bangkok chicken breed to Indonesia for the first time. Following international certification (VHC) from Indonesia’s DGLASH, exports are set to begin in April 2025, with an initial target of 12,000 birds valued at approximately 300 million baht annually.

The Ayam Bangkok chicken is prized for its tender, naturally sweet meat and halal certification, appealing strongly to Indonesia’s Muslim population of over 230 million. It is also well-suited for local dishes such as “ayam goreng.”

This breakthrough benefits Thailand by increasing farmers’ incomes and enhancing the country’s reputation as the “ASEAN hub for quality livestock production.”

Indonesia has also expressed interest in learning from Thailand’s expertise in foot-and-mouth disease prevention and livestock breeding improvement. The partnership opens doors for expanding exports of beef cattle and dairy products in the future. In 2024, Thailand’s livestock exports to Indonesia reached 4.6 billion baht, underscoring the sector’s rapid growth and Thailand’s readiness to strengthen sustainable agricultural trade networks.
