Thailand strengthened its position as a leading force in Southeast Asia’s energy transition as Energy Minister Auttapol Rerkpiboon (อรรถพล ฤกษ์พิบูลย์) presided over the opening of the IEEE PES GTD Asia 2025 in Bangkok. The event, held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, brought together more than 10,000 participants and over 400 companies from more than 40 countries, marking a significant milestone in advancing the nation’s pathway toward carbon neutrality.
The conference served as an international platform to showcase Thailand’s progress in clean energy integration, renewable development, and modern energy infrastructure. The Ministry of Energy highlighted the strategic value of hosting the event, emphasizing its contribution to strengthening national energy security, attracting clean energy investment, and supporting sustainable economic growth in alignment with global energy trends.
Dr. Narin Phoawanich, (นรินทร์ เผ่าวณิช) Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and President of IEEE Thailand, presented EGAT’s comprehensive roadmap to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The roadmap includes an interim target to reduce emissions by 50 percent by 2037 through innovation, digital transformation, and the deployment of clean and intelligent energy technologies.
Key initiatives underway include the implementation of Direct Power Purchase Agreements to enable access to renewable electricity, the introduction of the Utility Green Tariff 1 (UGT1) for non-source-specific green power, and a nationwide grid modernization programme to support the rapid growth of electric vehicles, data centres, and AI-driven industries. EGAT is also advancing major renewable energy projects, including a 600-megawatt Small Modular Reactor, 2,725 megawatts of floating solar capacity across nine reservoirs, pumped-storage hydropower development, solar farm expansion, and battery energy storage systems.
To support long-term energy resilience, EGAT is moving forward with a transmission system development plan covering 2025–2037. The plan features three implementation phases with a combined investment of 33,500 million baht, aimed at increasing national transmission capacity, facilitating renewable integration, and creating employment opportunities for more than 4,600 positions.
The IEEE PES GTD Asia 2025 conference reinforced Thailand’s commitment to leading the region in clean energy advancement, technological innovation, and sustainable power sector transformation.
