Thailand Leads ASEAN–China Trade Upgrade with ACFTA 3.0 to Boost Regional Growth and Innovation

Thailand played a key role in driving the signing of the protocol to upgrade the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA 3.0) during the 28th ASEAN-China Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The upgraded agreement aims to modernize the existing framework to better align with the current global economic environment, strengthening Thailand’s leadership within ASEAN and deepening regional economic cooperation.

ACFTA 3.0 focuses on enhancing trade facilitation, transparency, and standards in customs procedures, industry, and agriculture. It also introduces new areas of collaboration such as the digital economy, green economy, supply chain connectivity, competition policy, consumer protection, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These elements align with Thailand’s goals to advance digital transformation and sustainable, low-carbon economic growth while creating new trade opportunities with China—Thailand’s top trading partner for over 12 consecutive years.

Following the signing, Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce will carry out domestic procedures to prepare for implementation, including public outreach and consultations to help local businesses understand and utilize the agreement’s benefits. Between January and September 2025, Thailand–China trade reached 108.6 billion USD, an increase of 28.08% from the previous year, led by exports such as fruit, rubber products, computers, and plastic pellets. The ACFTA 3.0 is expected to further strengthen Thailand’s economic position in the region and promote sustainable growth through innovation and regional cooperation.
