Thailand has taken a major step toward becoming a regional hub for Islamic studies with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and the Office of the Sheikhul Islam. The agreement establishes the Council of Muslim Scholars of Thailand and launches the “Thailand Islamic Education Hub,” creating a formal academic mechanism to connect universities, religious institutions, scholars, and government agencies.
As a multicultural society where people of different faiths coexist peacefully, Thailand recognizes the long-standing contributions of Thai Muslims to religion, education, the economy, and community development nationwide. In recent years, higher education institutions, religious organizations, and civil society have worked together to advance Islamic education through teaching, research, and academic services, demonstrating Thailand’s potential for regional leadership in this field.
The initiative reflects a shared commitment to elevate Thailand’s role in cooperation with the global Muslim community and the international arena. The new council will help develop knowledge, academic standards, and policy recommendations to support long-term development of Thai Muslim society. The Thailand Islamic Education Hub will further promote curriculum development, research collaboration, student and staff exchanges, and position Thailand as an international destination for Islamic studies.
