Thailand Launches First SAF-Powered Low-Cost Green Route Connecting Bangkok and Phu Quoc

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in partnership with VietJet Thailand and PTT Oil and Retail Business Public Company Limited (PTT OR), officially launched the “Green Route” inaugural flight between Bangkok and Phu Quoc. The initiative marks Thailand’s first low-cost carrier service on this route powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), reinforcing Thailand’s commitment to sustainable tourism and regional low-carbon travel within ASEAN.

The inaugural flight, held on 6 November 2025 at Suvarnabhumi Airport, was attended by key figures from government and industry, including H.E. Mr. Pham Viet Hung, Ambassador of Vietnam to Thailand; Mr. Panya Chupanit, Director-General of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning; and Air Chief Marshal Manat Chavanaprayoon, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). The event symbolized the collaboration between the aviation and energy sectors in promoting clean mobility and carbon reduction.

Under the “Fly Green” programme, VietJet Thailand became the first Thai low-cost carrier to integrate SAF into regular commercial operations. The Bangkok–Phu Quoc–Bangkok service represents the airline’s second Green Route, following the Bangkok–Da Nang debut in 2024. Developed in collaboration with PTT OR and Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services (BAFS), the project supports the goal of achieving a five-percent SAF blend across all flights by 2030. Each SAF-powered flight can reduce approximately 250 kilograms of carbon dioxide and cut up to 80 percent of total emissions, contributing to long-term decarbonization targets.

Sustainable aviation fuel, produced from renewable sources such as used cooking oil, agricultural residues, and biogas, meets international safety and performance standards. Thailand’s strong bio-based resource potential positions the country as a regional hub for SAF development.

TAT continues to promote sustainable tourism through initiatives including the Thailand Tourism Awards, CF-Hotels, the Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR), and the Krabi Prototype project. The Green Route partnership highlights Thailand’s leadership in sustainable travel and strengthens its position as a trusted, value-driven destination for responsible tourism.
