Thailand and Australia Deepen Strategic Partnership on Trade and Security

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Thailand–Australia Strategic Partnership during bilateral talks at Parliament House in Canberra on August 19, 2026.

The discussions advanced cooperation in trade, investment, security, science, innovation, education, and people-to-people relations. This was the first official visit to Australia by a Thai prime minister in 14 years and preceded the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027.

The leaders welcomed two joint statements. The Joint Statement on Transnational Crime enhances cooperation against online scams, cybercrime, human trafficking, illicit drugs, money laundering, and other cross-border offenses.

The Leaders’ Statement on Deepening Economic Engagement encourages greater use of the Thailand–Australia Free Trade Agreement, increased two-way trade and investment, resilient supply chains, and a rules-based multilateral trading system.

Both sides also welcomed a Letter of Intent between Thailand’s National Science and Technology Development Agency and Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation to expand cooperation in science, research, and innovation.

Prime Minister Anutin welcomed Australia’s proposal to establish biennial meetings between the two countries’ defense ministers. This mechanism aims to strengthen defense cooperation and support peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Thailand and Australia also agreed to collaborate through ASEAN, the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), the Mekong–Australia Partnership, and other multilateral frameworks. Anutin thanked Australia for its continued support of Thailand’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Prime Minister Anutin expressed confidence that the elevated partnership will create new opportunities in trade, security, and innovation. Prime Minister Albanese reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to advancing these initiatives, welcomed the inclusion of the Thai private sector delegation, and formally accepted an invitation to visit Thailand in 2027.
