Thai Silk Meets Japanese Tradition in New ‘Thai Fabric Kimono’ Collection

Thailand is introducing a new “Thai Fabric Kimono” collection in collaboration with Kyoto’s renowned kimono merchant, transforming local silk into high fashion. The initiative is part of the royal “Pha Thai Sai Hai Sanuk” (ผ้าไทยใส่ให้สนุก) project, and reflects the royal legacy of preserving and promoting Thai textiles initiated by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother.

Set to launch in Tokyo and Kyoto on November 25, 2025, the project is jointly led by the Department of International Trade Promotion and the Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand. It connects Thai artisans with Japan’s fashion industry, ensuring sustainable income for weaving communities.

The fabrics selected come from two important weaving areas — Don Koi (ดอนกอย) in Sakon Nakhon and Na Wa (นาหว้า) in Nakhon Phanom — both tied to royal development projects. For the first time, Na Wa’s traditional textiles will be exported to global markets.

Blending Thai craftsmanship with Japan’s kimono heritage, this collection marks a new chapter in Thai textile history, driving both cultural exchange and sustainable creative industry growth.
