His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana on 2 November 2025 at 19.33 hr attended the premiere performance of the khon masked drama "Bali's Unbreakable Oath" at the main hall of the Thailand Cultural Center in Bangkok.
Organized by the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques (SUPPORT Foundation), which was established by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother in 1976, the khon performance will run from 6 November to 8 December 2025 for the general public.
Khon is a form of Thai dramatic art that has its own unique identity, incorporating different fields of the arts, literature, rituals, and crafts. It involves graceful dance movements, instrumental and vocal renditions, and glittering costumes.
Her Majesty the Queen Mother called for the revival of the khon masked drama, which was falling into decline. Her Majesty expressed her wishes for the preservation of this traditional performing art and instructed the creation of khon costumes and accessories in accordance with the ancient style, while developing khon performances to be more modern and suitable for the new era. This would encourage the younger generation to be aware of the value of Thai arts.
His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua intends to preserve khon performances and would like to see the younger generation inherit this part of the national cultural heritage. In November 2018, UNESCO inscribed "Khon Masked Dance Drama in Thailand” on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The SUPPORT Foundation organizes the khon performance annually, in response to the royal aspiration of the Queen Mother. This year’s production features the episode "Bali's Unbreakable Oath" from the Ramakian, the Thai version of the Indian epic Ramayana.
