Kasetsart University has successfully developed Thailand’s first Atlantic salmon farming project

The Faculty of Fisheries at Kasetsart University has successfully developed Thailand’s first Atlantic salmon farming project using a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS), marking a major milestone in the country’s aquaculture innovation. The project demonstrates the potential of cultivating high-value cold-water fish in a tropical environment through advanced water management and temperature control technology. The initiative was supported through collaboration with private-sector partners and technical cooperation from Chile, one of the world’s leading salmon-producing countries.

The research focused on adapting Atlantic salmon farming to Thailand’s climate by using a closed-loop water circulation system capable of maintaining stable environmental conditions throughout the production process. The RAS technology helps reduce water consumption, improve biosecurity, and minimize environmental impacts while increasing production efficiency. Researchers from the Faculty of Fisheries stated that the system could pave the way for sustainable domestic production of premium seafood previously dependent on imports. 

The achievement also reflects the Faculty of Fisheries’ ongoing commitment to research and innovation in aquaculture and aquatic science. The university aims to further develop knowledge in fish nutrition, aquatic animal health, and aquaculture engineering to support future commercial expansion. The project is expected to strengthen Thailand’s food security, create new economic opportunities in high-value fisheries, and promote the use of environmentally friendly aquaculture technologies.
