Enhancing Bilateral Relations and Cooperation between Thailand and the Holy See

Thai DPM Begins Europe Visit at the Vatican, Reaffirming Over 350 Years of Relations

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow is currently on an official visit to Italy, Vatican City, Spain, and Portugal from 18 to 23 October 2026. The trip marks a key milestone in strengthening Thailand-Europe relations, advancing Thailand-EU FTA negotiations, supporting Thailand’s bid for OECD membership, and expanding trade, investment, and multi-sectoral cooperation.

The Deputy kicked off his European tour in Vatican City on 19 October, paying a courtesy call on senior Vatican officials Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

Together, both sides celebrated over 350 years of enduring relations, a bond marked by landmark moments such as the Royal Visit to the Vatican by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great in 1960 and the visit to Thailand by His Holiness Pope Francis in 2019.

Building on this rich historical foundation, the two sides engaged in constructive discussions spanning several key areas of cooperation:
• Humanitarian & Social Cooperation
The conversation centered on collaboration — Thailand expressed gratitude for the Vatican’s support of local healthcare and education initiatives. At the same time, Vatican leadership praised Thailand for its vibrant cultural diversity and religious harmony.
• Diplomatic Relations
Both sides welcomed plans to establish a diplomatic and official visa exemption agreement.
• National Milestones
Thailand shared updates on domestic progress, including the successful hosting of the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings.
• Global & Regional Issues

Both sides reaffirmed their support for multilateralism and exchanged views on pressing global matters including the Middle East, Russia-Ukraine, Thailand-Cambodia, and Myanmar.
Altogether, the discussions reflected the strong, shared commitment of Thailand and the Vatican to deepen their friendship and champion global peace and sustainable development.
