Embassies Warn Nationals After Cambodian Fire Sparks Border Clashes

International responses are mounting after the latest round of clashes along the Thailand–Cambodia border, which erupted on 7 December following initial fire from Cambodian forces. Several foreign embassies have issued urgent travel advisories, reflecting heightened concern over the rapidly evolving security situation.

The U.S. Embassy has advised its citizens to avoid all travel within 50 kilometers of the border, citing intensified exchanges of artillery and small-arms fire on 8 December. The advisory emphasized that conditions remain volatile and that the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency assistance in affected areas.

The Philippine Embassy also released an urgent alert, urging Filipinos in border provinces, including Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Sa Kaeo, Buri Ram, Chanthaburi and Trat, to follow instructions from Thai authorities, remain vigilant, and avoid travel to high-risk zones. Travel to these provinces is “highly discouraged” until further notice.

The Australian government expressed “deep concern” over the escalation and called on both Thailand and Cambodia to uphold the 28 July ceasefire agreement and take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions.

Indonesia’s embassy in Bangkok reminded Indonesian nationals in Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani to stay calm, monitor official information, and avoid travelling to border-adjacent areas.

The wave of advisories underscores rising international alarm as border hostilities continue, with governments urging their citizens to prioritize safety and stay away from conflict-affected areas until the situation stabilizes.
