EEC approves digital infrastructure plan to position Thailand as ASEAN's Digital Hub

The meeting of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Policy Committee focused on advancing the EEC’s transformation into “ASEAN’s Digital Hub” and a center for next-generation industries. The committee approved the Digital Infrastructure Development Plan (2024–2027), designed to transition the EEC into a fully digital economy and society. The plan emphasizes modernizing digital infrastructure, improving services, and integrating smart city systems to enhance quality of life and attract technological investment. It consists of two core strategies: developing infrastructure to support the digital economy, and enhancing digital technology use to generate economic, social, and environmental value.

Key initiatives include upgrading telecommunications systems to improve international connectivity, integrating digital systems with transportation and utilities, updating digital-related laws, and expanding smart city and e-government services. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society will oversee the plan’s progress, while other agencies will align their own strategies and budgets accordingly. The committee also reviewed the Eastern Economic Corridor Act (2018), confirming that it continues to effectively support investment, competitiveness, and social equality. The law’s mechanisms—such as the One-Stop Service (OSS)—help lower operational barriers, promote community development, and ensure inclusive growth.

In addition, the meeting reported significant progress in EEC development, with 46 special economic zones already established and 7 more pending approval. These include industrial parks, zones for specific activities, and privately developed areas. The EEC’s OSS system now offers over 50 streamlined digital services, covering permits, investment applications, and infrastructure development. Overall, the meeting reaffirmed the government’s determination to position the EEC as a regional leader in digital innovation, investment facilitation, and sustainable economic growth.
