Driving Proactive Water Management Policy for Durian Orchards and Wildlife in Chanthanburi

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin visited Chanthaburi Province on 8 August 2026 to advance proactive water management, ensuring sufficient supplies for agriculture, local communities, and wildlife.

On this occasion, Minister Suchart inaugurated the Thung Yai Reservoir Rehabilitation Project in Tha Mai District, which includes the installation of a solar-powered water distribution system. The project adds 280,000 cubic meters of water storage capacity, covering more than 2,500 rai (400 hectares) of farmland and benefiting over 200 local families. It will help secure water supplies during the dry season, accommodate excess water during the flood season, and reduce energy costs in water distribution. 

Chanthaburi is one of Thailand’s major durian-producing areas, with more than 478,000 rai (76,480 hectares) of durian plantations and production expected to exceed 683,000 tonnes in 2026. The project will help strengthen water security for the province’s agricultural sector and support the production of Thailand’s important cash crops.

The Minister also inspected a water source rehabilitation project for wild elephants in Khao Khitchakut District. The project will add 220,000 cubic meters of water capacity, helping provide sufficient water for elephants and other wildlife, reduce pressure on wildlife from leaving forest areas, and maintain ecological balance.

The Government’s proactive water management approach aims to ensure water security across key agricultural areas, communities, and forests, supporting economic development alongside environmental sustainability.
