Discover the charm of Chinatown at Yao Young Yiam event

Members of the public are invited to explore the enduring charm of Yaowarat (เยาวราช) during the event “BEM Happy Journey 2025: Yao Young Yiam,” scheduled at MRT Wat Mangkon (วัดมังกร) Station, Exit 1 and 2, from tomorrow until Sunday between 1pm and 8pm. The programme is organised by Bangkok Expressway and Metro in cooperation with the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand to highlight the rich Thai–Chinese cultural identity embedded within one of Bangkok’s most historic districts.

The 2025 theme, “Yao Young Yiam,” (เยา ยัง เยี่ยม) underscores the exceptional character of the Yaowarat neighbourhood across generations, emphasising the district’s dynamic spirit and long-standing traditions. The event has been designed to reconnect visitors with the living history of the community while presenting stories that continue to be passed down through successive eras.

Two major exhibitions will feature prominently. “Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother: Strengthening Thai–Chinese Relations” presents historical contributions reinforcing ties between Thailand and Chinese communities. “Yao Young Yiam: The Dragon Road Never Sleeps” highlights the legacy of Teochew opera alongside contemporary narratives reflecting the evolving voices of the Yaowarat populace.

Creative workshops will offer hands-on cultural experiences, including the weaving of auspicious “Zhongguo Jie” knots, calligraphy of blessing messages, and traditional Chinese fan painting. Advance registration is required for workshop participation due to limited capacity.

A rare performance series by the distinguished Sai Yong Hong opera troupe will take place daily at 6pm, featuring Heroic Legend of the Yang Family – The Grateful Son on Friday, Justice Bao – The Verdict of Empress Li on Saturday, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms – Lu Xun (ลกซุน), Cao Cao (เฉาเชา) Leads the Army on Sunday. Admission is free for all performances.

Well-known food establishments such as Jok Toh Diew, Singapore Pochana (สิงคโปร์โภชนา), Kan Kee Namtao Thong (คั้นกี่น้ำเต้าทอง) and Gu Long Bao, along with vendors offering traditional sugar-art sculptures, will provide signature dishes and snacks throughout the event.

Registered participants will receive a special-edition newspaper with a stamp passport. Five stamps collected through purchases at participating stalls on Plaeng Nam (แปลงนาม) Road and selected outlets at I’m Chinatown shopping centre may be redeemed for exclusive BEM souvenirs while supplies last.
