Phuket Province has launched a cashless payment system on its “Phuket Smart Bus,” marking a significant step toward becoming a smart, digitally connected public transport network to ensure convenience for both local residents and international tourists.
The EMV Contactless system, in the form of “Tap & Go” technology, began to operate on 15 January 2026, with Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn presiding over the launching ceremony. Also joining the ceremony were representatives from Phuket City Development Company, and members of the public and private sectors.
The Phuket Governor stated that Phuket is one of Thailand’s major tourist cities and a leading global tourist destination. The development of a modern, convenient, safe, and environmentally friendly public transport system is, therefore, important to the favorable image of the city. It would also enhance Thailand’s competitiveness, as well as promoting local economy and tourism in the long run.
The Governor pointed out that tourist and resident behaviors are now changing. Convenience, speed, and safety in travel and spending have become major factors for the satisfaction of tourists and their travel decisions.
He said that the introduction of this payment system in public transport would increase transport efficiency. This will also demonstrate that Phuket is ready to move toward a cashless society, in line with Thailand’s smart city and sustainable tourism policies and its efforts to upgrade the people’s quality of life through the use of digital technology.
On this occasion, the Governor commended Phuket City Development Company and Phuket Smart Bus Company for their roles in developing the public transport system in Phuket to keep pace with changes. He also thanked Mastercard (Thailand) for supporting the project and Krungthai Bank for maintaining payment and back-end systems to ensure stability and security.
According to Phuket City Development Company, the introduction of the Tap & Go system will offer a new payment option, reduce reliance on cash, and make travel safer for tourists, as they will not have to carry large amounts of cash. The system will be tested further for stability before being expanded to other bus services in the province.
Mastercard (Thailand) indicated that the EMV Contactless Open-loop payment system would provide more convenience for both the general public and tourists, without downloading applications, or using passenger cards.
The system has been applied in more than 390 cities worldwide. It will minimize travel obstacles, promote the use of public transport, reduce the use of personal cars, and ease traffic congestion.
Three existing Phuket Smart Bus routes are likely to continue to enjoy growth, with about 430,000 passengers in 2024 and 490,000 in 2025.
