Thailand Halts Military Ties with Cambodia after Landmine Blast

The government has announced a series of measures in response to a border landmine incident that injured Thai soldiers, prompting a suspension of military cooperation with Cambodia. The decisions were made during a National Security Council (NSC) meeting at Government House, chaired by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, with Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit and Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow briefing the press afterward.

The NSC resolved to suspend a Joint Declaration signed with Cambodia on October 26 in Kuala Lumpur and halt the repatriation of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war. Officials cited the presence of landmines within Thai territory as a direct threat to national sovereignty and security, and condemned the resulting injuries to Thai soldiers as unacceptable.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue a formal diplomatic protest to the Cambodian government and notify the United States and Malaysia, which had acted as witness states to the agreement. Thailand also intends to provide an international briefing to explain the developments and call on Cambodia to take full responsibility for the incident.

Gen Nattaphon stated that the armed forces are authorized to conduct military operations as necessary, in accordance with the rules of engagement. While no operational details were disclosed, the military is said to be fully prepared to act to safeguard national territory and protect both citizens and personnel.
