Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has halted a proposal to extend the stay of nearly 100,000 Cambodian nationals whose work permits expired in February 2025, citing legal concerns and unresolved security issues. The plan, submitted under the previous administration, would have allowed undocumented individuals to remain in Thailand despite gaps in verification.
Government agencies reported that many of the affected workers cannot be properly identified or located, raising red flags over possible national security threats and unregulated migration. Questions have also emerged over the accuracy of residency data and the lack of proper screening mechanisms.
Anutin has directed the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Labour to conduct a full review of the proposed measure, ensuring that all procedures comply with legal standards and eliminate potential loopholes. The move seeks to tighten control over foreign labor management and prevent misuse of immigration channels.
The Cabinet is expected to revisit the resolution after the review is complete, with renewed focus on transparency, enforcement, and the upholding of Thailand’s labor and immigration laws.
