The Thai - Cambodian Joint Information Coordination Center Underlines Need for Cambodia to Clarify and Take Responsibility for Cross - Border firing injuring Thai soldier

Regarding the cross-border firing from the Cambodian side this morning that resulted in a Thai soldier being injured, Air Chief Marshal Prapas Sornchaidee, Director of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Information Coordination Center, stated that Thailand places great importance on upholding the ceasefire agreement and utilizing the mechanisms, including on communications, which have been agreed upon by both sides.

The Director confirmed that in the first paragraph of the recent Joint Statement between Thailand and Cambodia it clearly states that both sides must avoid unprovoked firing and that this agreement must not be violated under any circumstances. Accordingly, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send a formal protest to the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, requesting clarification on the cause of the incident, appropriate accountability, and an apology for the incident which caused injury to a Thai soldier.

The Thai – Cambodian Joint Information Coordination Center believes that even if Cambodia claims the incident was an accident and unintentional, the fact that it injured a soldier necessitates a clarification and the need for accountability in accordance with international practices. This is crucial to maintain confidence in the ceasefire agreement and to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future.

Thailand affirms its actions are being conducted with the utmost restraint as Thailand will adhere to peaceful means. Any military operations will be well within the agreed-upon framework and in accordance with the principle of proportionality. If any further situation arises, actions will be carefully considered based on the severity and nature of the incident.

The Joint Information Coordination Center urges the Cambodian side to promptly provide an official clarification, take responsibility for the incident, and cooperate in maintaining the atmosphere of peace under the ceasefire agreement for the benefit of the security and peace for both countries.
