Beyond the Plate How Thailand's Culinary Renaissance is Dominating the Global Stage and Powering a 700 Billion Baht Economy

Thailand is positioning its culinary heritage as a primary economic engine, projected to propel the national restaurant market to a value of 700 billion baht by 2026. By leveraging gastronomy as a core Soft Power, the government aims to bridge the gap between traditional culture and modern commerce, ensuring that the global popularity of Thai food translates directly into local community income and job creation.

The Department of Business Development recently launched the third year of its "Travel, Enjoy, Eat Thai SELECT Year 3" initiative, a strategic partnership involving over 25 agencies. This campaign focuses on utilizing the Thai SELECT certification to guarantee authentic tastes and high service standards, effectively elevating the country's image as a top-tier global gastronomic destination.

Running from 1 April to 30 June 2026, the program integrates the food industry with the tourism sector. Over 450 certified restaurants nationwide are participating in activities designed to stimulate domestic spending and support the entire supply chain—from local farmers providing raw materials to small-scale operators. This holistic approach not only promotes Thailand’s unique cultural identity but also strengthens the foundation of the grassroots economy through sustainable, creative tourism.
