Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother was involved in the lives and care of her subjects as no other queen of the Kingdom of Thailand before her. Her Majesty’s compassion and contribution were widely known to the public. Although the Queen Mother has left this world for good, she still holds a very special place in the hearts of Thai people and foreigners, as well.
Known far and wide as one of the most beautiful queens in the world, Her Majesty’s beauty was more than beauty of face. Her beauty glowed from within, as it was an inner beauty of soul and came from her pure kindness, shining in her eyes and coming to life in her smile.
After the coronation of King Rama IX on 5 May 1950, the King and Queen Sirikit went back to Switzerland to spend some time there. They began making visits to the rural areas soon after their return to Thailand in late 1951. They wanted to see their people and also wanted to be seen by them.
Caring about the people and their welfare, when they visited the provinces with members of the Royal Family, they always had a medical team accompanying them to provide medical care for the sick and needy people. They found a great number of people lining the roads and waiting at village temples to see them. It was the first time for people in the rural areas to have met their king and queen in person.
The royal trips promoted a partnership between the throne and the people. With their observant eyes, King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit took in all the information from their encounters with the people and the environment, while projects took shape in their minds to help people in remote areas overcome hardships and difficulties. They followed up on all the issues with yearly visits that brought countless projects to fruition in all parts of the country.
Her Majesty spent as much time travelling as King Rama IX, equally indifferent to discomforts and long hours. Since her first appearance by the side of King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, Her Majesty the Queen Mother became the benefactress of the land and a source of inspiration of the Thai nation. She was also the subject of real affection and devotion among the people, realized and felt beyond the borders of Thailand.
Her Majesty is, indeed, the image of what is beautiful in humanity. Therefore, the much-beloved Queen Mother will remain in the hearts of Thai people forever.
