Thailand to takes medical diplomacy to Sri Lanka

Siriraj Hospital is extending its humanitarian mission beyond Thailand through the “Love for Humanity by Siriraj” project, which this year will provide 70 free knee replacement surgeries for patients in Sri Lanka. Following earlier successes in Nepal and Bhutan, the initiative highlights Thailand’s growing role in medical diplomacy. Using advanced, minimally invasive knee replacement techniques developed at Siriraj Hospital, the medical team aims to reduce pain, speed recovery, and lower healthcare costs. Patients who once required a week of hospitalisation can now often be discharged on the same day, thanks to innovations combining precision surgery, targeted anaesthesia, and early rehabilitation.

The project reflects a mission of compassion — offering free joint replacement surgeries to impoverished patients while training local doctors to perform the procedures independently. Over the past four years, the Siriraj team has travelled to 24 cities across Thailand, providing care to those in remote communities and sharing knowledge with regional medical professionals. This year’s Sri Lanka mission continues that spirit, with total costs across three participating countries estimated at 30 million baht, and each operation in Sri Lanka valued at around US$7,000 per knee.

The operation is funded through the Pha Pa charity, led by three respected monks  whose fundraising efforts raised 10 million baht in a single day, demonstrating the generosity of Thai Buddhists despite recent controversies in the monastic community. Taking place from November 15–21, 2025, at Kandy General Hospital, the project serves as both a royal tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 70th birthday and a celebration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Sri Lanka, symbolizing Thailand’s enduring compassion and commitment to healing beyond borders.
