Thailand Steps Up Efforts to Strengthen Its Global Role in Massage and Wellness

Thailand is building on its long-standing massage traditions to strengthen its position in the global wellness industry, investing in professional development, international exchange, and new opportunities for the next generation. At the heart of this push is Phuket, which Thailand is developing into a leading international wellness destination.

A key milestone in this effort is the NewMA Asia Massage Championship 2027, set to take place at Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus, from 22–24 January 2027. The event will bring together massage and wellness professionals from around the world to compete across seven categories spanning both Asian and Western traditions. Judging will go beyond technique alone, taking into account communication, ergonomics, innovation, and overall client experience.

Beyond the competition, international masterclasses, workshops, and demonstrations will give practitioners opportunities to exchange knowledge and learn from experts from different countries. Students will also have opportunities to gain practical experience and interact with international professionals. A special All-Star Championship will bring together leading practitioners and former medal winners.

The inaugural edition already made its mark, drawing 130 competitors, more than 40 international judges, and participants from over 25 countries. Building on that momentum, the 2027 edition aims to open even more doors for Thai practitioners and young talent entering the field.

By connecting Thai traditional medicine and massage with education, professional development, and international standards, Thailand is seeking to strengthen its role in the global wellness industry and establish Thai massage as a recognized professional strength while developing the people and skills needed to drive the industry forward.
