Anutin Charnvirakul Voted as the 32nd Prime Minister of Thailand

The House of Representatives, during its session on 5 September 2025, voted Bhumjaithai Party Leader Anutin Charnvirakul as the new prime minister of Thailand, with majority support.

Mr. Anutin secured 311 votes to become Thailand’s 32nd prime minister, defeating Mr. Chaikasem Nitisiri, the Pheu Thai Party’s candidate, who received 152 votes, while 27 members of the House of Representatives abstained from voting.

The vote for the new prime minister was held after former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, from the Pheu Thai Party, had been dismissed from office by the Constitutional Court for an ethical breach over her private conversation with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia.

Born in Bangkok on 13 September 1966, Mr. Anutin is the eldest son of Mr. Chavarat Charnvirakul, former Minister of the Interior and founder of Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction. He completed his secondary education at Assumption College in Bangkok and received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Hofstra University in New York. He also earned a Mini MBA from the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Thammasat University, in 1990.

Mr. Anutin has held several ministerial positions, including deputy minister of public health, deputy minister of commerce, deputy prime minister and minister of public health, and deputy prime minister and minister of the interior.
