Wian Tian Takhan – Sukhothai Ancient City

Wian Tian Takhan – Sukhothai Ancient City #VisakhaBuchaDay2026

This year, anyone wishing to experience the breathtaking beauty of hundreds of glowing Takhan traditional lamps, shimmering and sparkling amid a thousand-year-old ancient city, must not miss this event.

You are warmly invited to light the flames and enjoy the atmosphere of faith at the "Wian Tian Takhan – Sukhothai Ancient City" event. This event is held for Visakha Bucha Day, a very important day in Buddhism celebrated by Buddhists around the world. This day marks three major events in the life of the Lord Buddha: His Birth, Enlightenment, and Passing (Nirvana).

In Thailand, this beautiful tradition has been passed down since the Sukhothai era. Today, it is still proudly preserved and continued.
The main highlight of the event is the candlelight procession using the "Takhan," There are ancient clay pots filled with oil and lit in the traditional way, symbolizing a "Pradip," or light source. This beautiful tradition has been down since the golden age of the Sukhothai Kingdom.

Lighting the Takhan worship the Triple Gem shows respect to the Buddha of the past, present, and future. The bright light represents wisdom that guides our lives.
When hundreds of Takhan are lit and around the ancient ruins at night, they create a beautiful and peaceful view. This deeply shows the uniqueness of Sukhothai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This special event happens only once a year, inviting everyone to experience this beautiful tradition together.

Special Offer! Visitors can register for a free "ancient Takhan" to join the event (limited to 300 per day). Plus, entry to the event is completely free!
Join us to light the lights of faith on this special night of Visakha Bucha Day.
