Thailand Pushes Aviation Hub Vision with Seaplane Network, Krabi–Phuket Trial Set for 2026

The Thai government is moving forward with plans to transform the country into a regional aviation hub by introducing seaplane services to improve connectivity between key tourism destinations along the Andaman coast. According to the Deputy Government Spokesperson, the administration of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is prioritizing transport and tourism development to strengthen Thailand’s position as a leading travel and aviation center in Southeast Asia while creating greater economic value from high-quality tourism.

The initiative gained momentum following a visit by the Deputy Transport Minister to Krabi International Airport, where discussions were held with government agencies and private-sector stakeholders on the introduction of seaplane operations. The project aims to provide fast and seamless connections between airports and major island and coastal destinations, offering premium travel options for international visitors. The Ministry of Transport plans to develop Krabi International Airport as an “Airport for Regional Development,” serving as a gateway that integrates air travel with marine tourism across the Andaman region.

Seaplanes are expected to play a key role in enhancing Thailand’s tourism competitiveness and supporting future growth in the sector. To accelerate implementation, the ministry is establishing a Strategic Integration Committee for Seaplane Operations, bringing together public agencies, aviation experts, and private-sector representatives to develop operational guidelines and ensure compliance with international aviation safety standards. The government believes seaplane services will attract high-value and high-spending tourists while generating benefits for related industries, including aviation, hospitality, restaurants, tourism services, emergency medical transport, and maritime security operations.
