His Majesty the King has graciously granted permission for a new rose cultivar to be named “Queen Suthida” in honor of Her Majesty the Queen on the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty's fourth-cycle birthday anniversary on June 3, 2026.
The new cultivar was developed by the Royal Project Foundation, with research beginning in 2018 at the Khun Huai Haeng Research Unit of the Inthanon Royal Agricultural Research Station in Chom Thong district, Chiang Mai province. The rose was created by crossbreeding the Ocean Song cultivar and the Nightingale cultivar. Its scientific name is Rosa “Royal 3”, which belongs to the Rosaceae family of ornamental flowering plants.
According to the Royal Project Foundation and the Office of the Royal Development Projects Board, the “Queen Suthida” rose has an upright stem with green thorns and young shoots that are red. The plant grows to about 52 to 67 centimeters in height and produces six to eight branches. Its medium dark green leaves have slightly wavy, serrated edges.
The rose produces solitary double blooms. The buds measure about 1.4 to 1.8 centimeters in width and expand to 7.0 to 9.7 centimeters in diameter when fully open. The flowers have five slender sepals and rounded, asymmetrical petals with gently undulating edges that curl slightly at full bloom.
