A New Era Begins for Thai Tourism! Thailand Nominates ‘Wat Phra Mahathat’ for UNESCO World Heritage 2026

Thailand continues to bring pride to its people! The Cabinet has officially approved the nomination of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, located in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, as the nation's 6th cultural World Heritage site—and the first from Southern Thailand. The proposal includes complete documentation, highlighting the temple’s distinctive blend of Hindu-Buddhist architecture and millennia-old cultural traditions.

The site embodies “Pala–Sri Lankan–Mon” influences from ancient civilizations. It also preserves the vibrant tradition of the “Pha Khuen That” robe procession, which is still practiced to this day.

If the site is officially recognized by UNESCO in 2026, it will elevate
Southern Thailand’s cultural tourism, boost local economies, and generate
income and national pride for Thais nationwide.

Road to World Heritage Status

  • Submit complete documents to UNESCO by Jan 31, 2025

Thailand’s “World Cultural Heritage Cities” are drawing heritage travelers, enhancing soft power, and fueling the creative economy— a true source of national pride!
